FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How many lessons will I need?

Everyone is different, but I would say for a...

  • Brand New Learner:  2 or 3 lessons (auto) or 4 or 5 lessons (manual) to build confidence and give you a good start.
  • Intermediate1 or 2 lessons to make sure you're driving correctly and to rectify any bad habits.
  • Advanced2 or 3 lessons to get you up to test level and refine all technical skills.

I'm unsure whether to learn in an auto or manual.  What do you think?

I would recommend you stick with whatever transmission you'll be practising with at home. If you only have access to an automatic, then stick with automatic and go for your test in an automatic. Once you have your licence you will be restricted to driving automatic cars for the first 12 months.  Once on Green P2s you will be permitted to drive a manual car and we can help with the transition from automatic to manual.

How long do lessons go for?

Lessons are usually one hour, but 1½ hour and 2 hour lessons are also available.  Sometimes it is preferable to have a longer lesson if you have limited time and you need to revise and refine all technical skills, or if you live a long way from town.

What cars do you have?

We have a Suzuki Swift automatic and a VW Beetle manual - both fully insured with dual controls and air conditioning.

Can I use my own car for the lesson?

Yes, if you have had some road experience and feel capable.  I would actually recommend you driving your own car if you are going for your test soon in that car.

How far in advance should I book a lesson?

It varies, but usually you will get in within a couple of days.  If you book about a week in advance you should be able to have the day and time you want.  Please note after 3.30 pm is the busiest time and may be booked up for at least a couple of weeks.

What car do I use for the test?

The RMS does NOT provide a car.  You can use your own car or the driving school car for the test (conditions - see below).  If you are using your OWN CAR we can meet you at the RMS and go out in your car for a one-hour session ($50) immediately prior to your test (which prepares you and settles the nerves).   Please note the duration of tests are approximately 35 minutes so we do NOT recommend any longer than a one-hour session prior to your test.

How much is it to use the Driving School car for the test?

The driving school cars are available for tests to our learners who have previously passed a mock test.  The cost is $135 which includes pick up, a 1-hour session to settle the nerves and drop back after the test.   Duration:  2 to 2½ hours
The price reduces to $125 if you don't require a drop back (as sometimes our students are met at the RMS by a friend or family member after the test).
PLEASE NOTE  Our cars are only available to our learners, and we do not hire out our cars to learners we have not seen before.
